Crooks and Castles was started in the mean streets of Los Angeles in the early 2000’s. 2002 to be exact, and that makes them somewhat of an OG heritage narrative as far as the Methylphenidate fueled conveyor belt of street wear is concerned.
All hail the return of the great man in the castle, we say.
Napoleon has returned from his castoff island.
The once championed street kings, who were the toast of Mac Miller, Diddy, Ceelo, Drake, and assorted sponsored skateboarders everywhere have reemerged with the new year’s vigor. You should have kept their seat at the cool kids lunch table warm, O ye of little faith.
C&C was one of the first streetwear lines to consciously embrace a narrative and soul, a story in every capsule, and create from a place that was equal parts street and polish. In fact, founders Dennis Calvero and Rob Panlilio issued this statement on their site.
We believe behind every Castle stands a Crook. Meaning behind every empire, someone did something that can be perceived as crooked to achieve their goal. Castles represents our goal. Our brand is for every hustler, entrepreneur, or mogul trying to win. C&C is deeply rooted in street culture with a luxury aesthetic, illustrated perfectly by our iconic Medusa logo.
By taking inspiration from the often violent and in-your-face gangs that roamed the hood, city, and even suburbia, C&C was formed. Castles have always been an unabashed fan of the villain, rooting for all the bad guys in movies, books, comics, rap songs, and even real life gangsters. After learning the basics on how to run a clothing brand by trial and error, Crooks and Castles was eventually born.
Crooks stands for all the gangsters, pimps, robbers and hustlers that Lil Wayne referenced in “Tha Block Is Hot”.
Castles are the people who ascend by the crook’s lifestyle. Castles stands for all the characters in history like Frank Lucas, Nucky Thompson, and Bugsy Seigel. In a way, the name could have easily been Crooks IN Castles.
Alas, art is the beautiful contradiction if nothing else.
Today, Crooks and Castles makes top quality clothing for men’s and women’s who are enduring their own struggle in the streets, as well as the folks who have made it big and are now sitting in castles of their own masonry. Whichever side of the chess board you find yourself on, Crooks and Castles will be there to wardrobe the rich and famous, and the broke and dangerous.
But that was always the mission. As made evident by this throwback interview from 2011 with co-founder Dennis Calvero.
Wanderset is proud to now offer the new look Crooks & Castles this week, they’ve moved past the monochromatic cornerstone and into the land of late 90’s esque bold primary colors that are right on trend for 2018.
Even the crooks have evolved this year.
