Dunks will be slammed. 3 pointers will be drained. Defense will not be played.

Defense, with the exception of the occasional 90’s boo-yah block, has never been a thing on All-Star weekend. It may hypothetically win championships but it doesn’t get ratings. Out of all the changes and new concepts introduced to the game, the stop-the-drive-defensive-fundamentals-challenge is not one of them.

This year, the NBA played to its strength (bankable star power), scrapped the East vs. West format, and went with Team LeBron James vs. Team Steph Curry. Brilliant pandering. Fans voted for the captains, captains Bron Bron and Steph picked their teams like it was recess kickball, and the kids got to have their cake and eat it. No one was shocked.

The NBA knows that it’s 100% a super-star driven league. More so than the NFL, NHL, MLB and MLS, hoops culture has always applauded their loudest and most outrageous characters. Lack of helmets and small 5-on-5 gameplay doesn’t hurt recognition either, but at least the NBA is smart enough to not stifle its best card to play (unlike the NFL which banned celebrations after touchdowns for a hot sec). Last year golf was more exciting than football until Brady did that shit only Brady does (except for last week and anytime he plays the Giants) and hurt the city of Atlanta more than the last season of Love & HipHop.

Houston Rocket’s James Harden is all smiles during a press conference in Oklahoma City.

NBA characters have a gift – an undeniable attraction and energy that’s as entertaining as it is effective. And if clothes make the man, then the

NBA has as much to offer off the court than that on it. Easily America’s most style-conscious league, stars like Russell Westbrook and James Harden start trends every time they hit a post-game presser. From the poised & dapper to the fuck-your-9-5 trap ass punk rockers, NBA stars are crushing the streets with their off-court style.
